Stay Focused On Your Small Business

01/25/12

After you have prepared a solid retail business plan which highlights the strategy of your company you need to stay focused and observe the procedures stated in your original business plan. That is why it is important to have a look at some of such procedures that  will help you be successful.

1. Make and stick to a  marketing plan.

It seems that most of the retail companies contain some sort of selling operations, therefore your sales department should focus on  a marketing plan, including short-term and long-term analyses. Such analyses will refer to some factors that will influence your future activity.

Your marketing plan will most likely deal with your competition on the market you operate, marketing potential  and retail sales projections. You must be always aware that no retail business goes on by itself once started. Yu must stay deeply involved and focused, being alert and monitoring the respective market all the time should be  the main job and concern of your sales managers.  No general manager or CEO can afford having sales managers who are taken by surprise. 2. Comply with accounting procedures.

There is a common thing within a company to see a rift between marketing and accounting people. Of course sales are important and sales groups think they are making the money. But staying focused on receiving the money from sales is also important.

Special and strict procedures are needed to be followed so that money goes smoothly in and out the company. Accounts payable, expenses and accounts receivable must be thoroughly controlled on a regular basis. As different as their work may seem, the accounting and marketing people are equally important and they must meet regularly – weekly and monthly. To keep these two activities of a company on the same path and concentrated on good result oriented concept must be a constant concern of  a business owner.

3. Human resources.

Managers must be convinced that their employees are not only a source of expenses. Managers must have a clear policy regarding human resources and create the necessary conditions to rely on their employees. Fixation on staff reduction at any cost, irrespective of their results will bring nothing good for the  company but a tense atmosphere totally inadequately for the business.

More personnel than necessary is not recommended either, but a good manager or owner will always take steps to include his personnel in special training and safety programs, to maintain and promote the good employees. Content employees means a lot for the company success. See How To Select The Right Person.

4. Selling the image of your company.

Image of a company is to be “sold” so that the target people may make your acquaintance, keep remembering you or fear you. To be concerned with your company image means that you make everything to be known as a first rank company in your field, that you are envied and fear by your competition.

Your competent managers should attend every important event on your market segment: conferences, conventions, seminars, workshops, etc. They should present the successful operations of the company, gather new information, make contacts, make audience understand why you are the best. These people are the interface of your company,  they should also have a good time and enjoy themselves when participating in such events. However, after they return, be sure you have their detailed reports on everything they did and found out on these occasions.

All the above factors are extremely important in managing a business. What is more important is to stay focused  during the whole process of  running a business so that it may be successful.
